JJ – My Way feat. Lil’ Wayne
Stumbled onto this one last Friday and have been jammin’ for a week straight. It’s like Thievery Corporation going on an Alice and Wonderland-esque adventure in the middle of Oakland, and the bubonic tonic that Weezy seems to slam daily oozes that codeine-syrup-induced flow back into an almost flawless syncopation sensation. When the IV-V-I chord harmonization tees-up, the production all comes together and gives the Birdman a reason to get out of jail free. Man, this song kills. Windows down in winter.

Keedz – Stand on the Word
If you are an MGMT/Passion Pit/Phoenix phan, this is worth checking out. It seems the crowd of younger children featured in many of those indie rock bands decided to get together, led by a fearless faux-Michael Jackson a-la Jackson 5. You’ll see what i mean. Is disco making a comeback? Retro was pretty 2008, but I’m not sure disco actually ever made it’s way into that phad. Sh*t is sicklickuhl. All in all a great song to get the energy levels up in almost a celebratory way. Like how you would feel at the end of a Friday. Or maybe the beginning of one?

Gorillaz – Stylo
What uppppp bass line! In true Gorillaz form, this song kicks off with a beat that pretty much dictates the entire song, like a modern, computerized Talking Heads mentality. The vocals and samples in this song are so emo, I love it. An amazing job at re-creating the sound that reminds me of a 1987 Kurt Russel movie – I honestly couldn’t tell you when this was produced if I didn’t know who it was. Does that make it timeless? I hope not.

Mr. Flash – Dirty Bossa Nova
On a lighter note, Mr. Flash delivers an airy and clean jazz kicker, overlaid with a fresh beat and some not-so-fresh bells and whistles. Literally, there are bells and whistles in this song. Interestingly, this one disguises itself well by keeping the 4/4 tempo full of grace notes, giving you, the listener a total mind F, even though you probably WANT it to work out. Man, that’s annoying. At the very least, it would be interesting to see how this one played out as background music. Imagine the dancing?

Drake – Best I Ever Had (Matamatics Remix)
Ahhh a tall glass of pop elixer, flavored with a matamatical (?) profile that puts X+Y in sequence to FINALLY equal Z. This song is pretty hot and I expect it to make it’s way to iPods everywhere – Sean Kingston’s Face Drop + Iyaz’s Replay + a small slice of T.I. and wham…success. Total dancing in my chair song. I like to think about
what Drake felt to write a song called Best I Ever Had verses Vertical Horizon who wrote a song with the same title. I mean, they obviously had the best they ever had…but Drake is probably making about $5M off this song and VH probably made enough to still be playing at Hampton Beach Casino Ballroom in October. Funny how that works.
