Hard not to love this, although I’m 100% sure I would not share my cookie. Sorry, bro. I have a soft spot in my heart for pop music, so I hope you enjoy this week’s jams. I know some of you are gonna hate on this. Do it.
• Owl City – Good Time (feat. Carly Rae Jepson) - When Owl City first came out I actually liked his stuff. Extremely weird but very unique, taking the Snow Patrol sound to a new electronic level. Partnering with CRJ was no small task and, as far as pop goes, these guys nailed it. I would say 30% of a successful pop song revolves around using the words “good” and “times” somewhere in the title or chorus.
• Katy Perry – Wide Awake -Katy Perry, however you slice it, is a total rock star. Only female in history to have 5 #1 singles on the SAME album, a blockbuster movie, and everything in between. I have major props for this modern Madonna and am not afraid to put her jams on my list any day of the week. F*uck yeah KP.
• Flo Rida – Whistle -Flo Rida, once again, delivers a bomb. Slowing it down to almost a Bubba Sparxxx “Deliverance” level, I don’t know whether to dance or just jam. Who cares.
• Van Halen – Mean Street – Yes, I love Van Halen. First DVD I ever bought. The power chords and drum beat in this make me want to put live electricity into my veins – I can almost feel the decibels tearing apart my ears in the front row of a live show. GOD it’s hard not to love that kind of power.
Little bit of everything this week. Some top 40 boomshakalaka and some older high five 80′s ballads. Slayer jams for all your athletes out there…
• Ke$ha – We R WhoWe R – Hard to ignore this one on the radio lately. Kesha going Buddhist with her message on this. Unfortunately this is being played to the most un-Buddhist demographic imaginable. Love the music industry.
• Pink – Raise Your Glass - Pink pulling an Enrique Iglesias-esque move with everyone saying "wait, you’re back?"
Flo Rida – Club Can’t Handle Me (Feat. David Guetta)
Keeping things straight planetary this Friday, Flo Rida teams up with the legend himeself, David Guetta to drop a full-on astrological bonesaw for your weekend pleasure. I have little problem flo-ing, almost as little of a problem as the riding this makes me want to do. I’m glad someone finally came out and said "you know, this club just can’t handle me." That’s fire. That’s Steve Thompson 2006/Ben Harris 2005 fire. Backdraft.
Feel the riddim, feel the rime…come on rude boy, iss bump-a-grind time! Rootdown and Soulforce team up like Jupiter and Saturn to put the Ur in Uranus. This is such a money driving song – throw this on when you are crusing home after work tonight. I suppose the Reggae influences really narrow the answer to the question, "Come on rude boy, are you big enough?" Dot. Dot. Dot.
(Plato)nic in nature, Akon and Matisyahu team up for a gravitational dub mix that swings out to the edge of the solar system for a few deep beats only to soar back into the elliptical orbit cycle. Dub is making a monster comeback, in part to global warming. LeBron actually signed up for tgifjams this week just because he heard I was throwing on a few reggae jams. I guess he is getting away from the whole Ohio "Glee" scene and into the Miami mindset.
Total space invasion of beats. If you haven’t heard, Theivery Corporation is blowing up the spot on the Maine State Pier next weekend, not unlike how hard these Pretty Lights light up dance floors from coast to coast. This track is hot off the press and equally rhythmic. Real good stuff, I think you will like.
Van Halen writes a song that I would argue should preface every meeting between countries. It’s got what it takes, so tell me why can’t this be love? Seriously. When I run for governor this is going to be my theme song. Yeah Maine!
